Leynard Legacy Grant Program
The Nanaimo Historical Society is offering micro-grants for projects that will improve our knowledge and understanding of the natural and cultural history of the Nanaimo area.
- Individuals and organizations based in the Nanaimo area are eligible to apply.
- In most cases, the Society will provide a one-time-only award to an individual or organization to encourage community engagement in our history and heritage.
The value of a grant will not exceed $2,000 and is subject to available funds.
Grant guidelines
- The project’s purpose must be connected to the natural or cultural history within the Nanaimo area.
- The objective of the project must relate to creating awareness and understanding of persons, events (natural and human), structures or activities that occurred within the Nanaimo area
- Grants may be awarded to an individual, a society or community group.
Activities the Nanaimo Historical Society will fund include
- Internships for a specific project
- Projects done in partnership with other organizations
- Project costs including: copying costs, printing expense, permission costs
- Advocacy projects excepting those of a partisan political nature
Activities the Nanaimo Historical Society will not fund include
- Projects whose primary focus is outside the Nanaimo area
- Travel and accommodation, administration costs, fundraising events, multiyear projects
- Special events not related to natural or cultural history within the Nanaimo area.
- Projects of a partisan political nature.
- The micro-grant will be paid out in two parts. The Initial payment will be up to 80% of the total grant. The final payment will be made after receipt of a final report from the recipient.
Applications
Applications for a Nanaimo Historical Society micro-grant should include
- Names and contact information of the key persons involved in the project
- Goal(s) and expected outcomes of the project
- Description of the project, including a statement of how the project is connected to the natural or cultural history within the Nanaimo area
- Explanation of how project relates to creating awareness and understanding of persons, events (natural and human), structures or activities that occurred within Nanaimo area
- Activities within the project that the grant will support
- Timeline of the project, including expected completion date
- Amount being applied for
Letter of Agreement and Release
Before receiving a grant, the Nanaimo Historical Society and the recipient will prepare an agreement outlining the activities that will be supported, reports required by the Society and a completion date for the project or portion of the project being supported by the microgrant.
The final report will include how the objectives being supported by the micro-grant were achieved and how the funds were used. The final payment will be made after the report is reviewed.
The recipient will permit the society to use the name of the individual or group and their project for promotional purposes. The society will have no ownership over the final product but may use images, if relevant, for promotional purposes. The recipient will be responsible for securing any releases for images including those of individuals and the use of any copyrighted material
